As home buying and new home construction face headwinds, more homeowners are staying in their aging homes and investing in remodeling jobs. This trend affects the construction industry, as more builders are also making remodeling their primary source of income.

An analysis of member data by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Washington, D.C., confirms this trend. Commenting on its own 2025 Member Census, NAHB reports that 21% of members listed residential remodeling as their primary business last year. While this number is flat from the previous year, the amount of income generated from these jobs is not. NAHB reports that the median annual revenue from remodeling jobs reached $2.1 million in 2025. This represents a 24% increase from the previous year. Remodelers reported median revenue of $1.7 million in 2024.

NAHB breaks down the results of the census in other ways, which also help describe the remodeling business. For example, within the subset of members who describe remodeling as their primary business, the dollar volume for most projects ranged from $1 million to $4.9 million. Slightly more than half, 52%, reported dollar volume within this range. The complete scale of dollar volume begins at less than $500,000 and tops out at $15 million or more. Very few builders reported dollar volume for remodeling of $5 million or more. The remaining dollar volume concentrated below $1 million, with 23% reporting volume of less than $500,000, indicates that most building remodeling comes from smaller jobs.

The NAHB also reports that building remodelers are finishing slightly more jobs. The total number of completed jobs costing $10,000 reached a median of eight in 2025. This is up from a median of six in 2024.

Figures from other sources measure a similar trend. The Harvard University Joint Center for Housing reported in August that the number of residential remodeling contractor establishments grew by a quarter between 2017 and 2022, reaching over 128,000 businesses. The Joint Center also notes that the value of receipts earned by these same remodeling businesses grew even faster, nearly doubling in real terms over the same period, from $67 billion to $129 billion.
