New York City-based Arrowsight offers intelligent video coaching—fixed-point cameras and video recorders installed on construction job sites that transmit videos by encrypted VPN connections to Arrowsight’s auditors. As each video is scored, the auditors can deliver near-real-time feedback and analytics that can be used to identify training needs.

The software enables the auditors to view a large number of videos, and those on the job site can see what was detected and act on the safety insights provided. A short video with safe and unsafe behaviors is sent to the project manager for discussion with others on the site. Since employers can see how their employees are working, they can include more training or safety refreshers before an incident occurs.

For example, Boston-based Suffolk Construction is now deploying Arrowsight’s video coaching services on many of its job sites, after participating in a multiyear project with Arrowsight, insurer Zurich North America, Zurich Resilience Solutions and several other construction companies.

Zurich tracked claim frequency data for nine New York City building projects equipped with Arrowsight cameras and 12 New York City projects without them across the highest-risk phases of the work. The results of the underwriting study found that the sites with Arrowsight technology saw more than a 50% reduction in the frequency of claims compared with the non-Arrowsight projects.

For Suffolk specifically, the contractor experienced roughly four times fewer claims and 10 times lower incurred losses on its projects in the pilot.

“Arrowsight's daily coaching reports, flagged videos and bi-weekly coaching sessions with our field staff made an enormous impact on the safety of our job sites,” Doug Ware, Suffolks’ senior vice president of risk management said in a press release.
