Already one of the nation’s best states for producing wind power, South Dakota is continuing to expand its capacity.

The South Dakota Searchlight reports that Chicago-based clean energy developer Invenergy has submitted an application for permits to the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission (SDPUC) to build and operate a wind power facility in Duel County, in the eastern portion of the state near the border with Minnesota.

The project will be built in the townships of Blom, Brandt, Clear Lake, Norden and Scandinavia, on privately-owned land, much of which is being leased.

It will consist of 68 wind turbines with a combined generating capacity of 250 megawatts (MW). Invenergy estimates that the project will create about 243 new jobs, $78 million in payments to landowners and $38 million in local tax revenue.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, South Dakota is in the top 25 of U.S. states with more than 1,000 MW of installed wind power capacity each. South Dakota has 3,462 MW of installed capacity, which puts it in the 13th spot on the list.

Texas leads all other states by a wide margin, with more than 37,000 MW of capacity. Oklahoma and Iowa have 11,000 MW and 10,000 MW of installed capacity, respectively. California has more than 6,000 MW of capacity.

The area of development is already a popular spot for wind farms. The new project will be located adjacent to two other existing facilities. The 109-turbine Deuel Harvest Wind Farm, also developed by Invenergy, is located only 6 miles away. Tatanka Ridge is adjacent to the southwest edge of the proposed project area. According to the Searchlight, if the new project is approved and built, it would raise the number of wind turbines in Deuel County to 233.
