Trends clearly show an increasingly strong emphasis is being directed at installing and maintaining adequate surge protection for electrical equipment and systems. This webinar is intended to review the basics of surge protection and the safety implications for systems and facilities. The program looks at what a surge is, what are the most common sources of surges and what damage can result from surges in an electrical system. The presentation reviews the types of surge protective devices and a comparison to surge arresters and how both types of protection operate. The applicable product standards will be mentioned in addition to installation requirements and best practices will be discussed. Trends in the National Electrical Code (NEC) in addition to current NEC requirements for SPDs will be reviewed with a look at other NFPA standards that contain surge protection requirements.
