Public Charging Powers Up

The City of Chicago plans to install more public EV charging infrastructure

The lack of an extensive network of charging stations has been one of the biggest drags on electric vehicles across the United States.

The lack of an extensive network of charging stations has been one of the biggest drags on electric vehicles across the United States.

According to recent survey data, the landscape is changing for the better. The EV Advocacy group, Plug In America, conducts regular surveys to assess the satisfaction level of EV drivers.

Its October 2025 Public Charging Experience survey reveals that EV drivers are warming up to the public charging experience, gradually. The survey asked drivers several questions about their experience using public charging stations. In each instance, the number of respondents who answered favorably has gone up since the same survey was conducted last year.

For example, the percentage of survey respondents who were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with the quantity of public chargers available to them increased by 7.5 percentage points, from 36.1% in 2024 to 43.6% in 2025.

Similarly, the percentage of drivers who were satisfied or very satisfied with the availability of public charging options increased by 5.7 percentage points, from 37% to 42.7% in the same time frame.

Lastly, the percentage of survey respondents who were satisfied or very satisfied with the reliability of their public charging options increased by 7.6 percentage points from 38.1% to 45.7%.

The sentiments reflected in the charging survey mirror those of Plug In America’s flagship annual EV Driver survey, last released in June 2025, which questions drivers about all aspects of the EV ownership experience. That survey also found growth in EV owner satisfaction over a one-year period.

For example, almost 92% of EV drivers surveyed said that it is likely or very likely their next vehicle will be an EV, an increase from 89% the year before.

The survey also reflects sustained market demand for EVs in the United States. It notes that over 1.56 million plug-in electric vehicles were sold in the U.S. in 2024, exceeding 1.5 million for the first time. The hot pace continued in 2025, when almost 300,000 new electric vehicles were sold in the first quarter, an increase of 11.4% from the same period in 2024.
