U.S.-based skywatchers and casual observers were thrilled in November when a powerful solar storm kicked off visible aurora borealis displays much further south than usual. Stunning photographs of vivid greens, purples and reds dancing across the sky spread widely on social media. Those that lived further from city or suburban sky glow were treated to much better shows, but recent developments in lighting technology and dark-sky ordinances could enable even those deep in urban areas to experience these natural treats for the eyes in the future (Check out this picture our graphic artist captured during this aurora).

Being in the lighting business, electrical contractors can play a role in protecting the dark skies for their communities by working with municipalities to install compliant fixtures, according to the timely article this month “Casting a Light on Light Pollution” by Susan DeGrane on page 62. She digs into solutions so if you try and experience the Geminid meteor showers in future Decembers, you might not need to drive far into rural areas to be delighted.

Building on the lighting theme this month, you can also check out the traffic light work done by Wheeler Electric Inc. in Rexburg, Idaho. The company supported its growing community by plotting the best way to install some much needed traffic lights. Read all about it in Susan Bloom’s “Easy Street,” page 54.

LED technology is a given in today’s lighting market, so you might wonder where we’re going next. Craig DiLouie spoke with some experts in the area. Learn “What’s Next in the Story” on page 34.

How Does Your Garden Grow?” you might ask. Well, you can outfit your own growing facility or help your industrial farming customers with the latest and greatest in agricultural lighting. We’ve come a long way from the power hogs of the past. Grow your knowledge courtesy of Katie Kuehner-Hebert on page 44.

Data centers, as you know, are a huge growth opportunity for electrical contractors, and they have very specific lighting needs and configurations. Good thing Chuck Ross tackled this topic in “All Data Centers and Light,” page 20.

Looking for a cool lighting fixture for an upcoming project? Check out the featured products on page 66 this month, which is all specialty luminaires. You might find the perfect solution for your customers.

As we close out another year at ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR, we want to thank you for inviting us into your homes and businesses. We feel honored that you’ve chosen to spend some time with us each issue, and we hope we can spark ideas that help your companies continue to flourish. Wishing you a safe and glowing holiday season and a happy new year.
