As digital technology occupies an ever-widening space in our daily lives, the prospect of total digital control over the household does not seem too far-fetched. In the latest iteration of the ongoing techno-evolution, AT&T recently announced the launch of a service that will give customers remote access to home security and a variety of other home management functions in a single system.

In April, the telecommunications giant launched the Digital Life service in 15 markets across the United States. Of course, the core feature of the technology is home security. As in any typical security system, customers will have around-the-clock home security monitoring through various monitoring centers that will alert authorities when emergencies arise.

The technology also features a new age twist on the home security concept, which makes it into what AT&T describes as “an all-digital, fully integrated, wireless home management system.” In plain speak, the technology allows customers to control and monitor a range of functions, including cameras, door locks, lights, thermostats, small appliances, water leaks and other aspects of the home. Users can access their home management system over the Internet using their smartphone, tablet or a PC. Customers can customize the things they want to manage, and prices range accordingly.

The markets that will feature the roll-out are Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Boulder, Colo; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Houston; Los Angeles; Miami; Philadelphia; Riverside, Calif.; San Francisco; Seattle; St. Louis; and portions of the New York and New Jersey metro area. AT&T plans to introduce Digital Life in some 50 markets by the end of this year.
