Eaton Corporation, a power management company based in Cleveland, is teaming with ATEC Training and Certification Services to offer a training course on the National Electrical Code (NEC) 500 standard. It will be offered only at the Eaton Experience Center in Houston.

According to Eaton, this course is the first of its kind in the industry. It features “enhanced modules” to help reduce both costs and the potential for “catastrophic events” on the job site. It will consist of hands-on training and an assessment in a realistic, simulated environment, focusing on NFPA 70 2014, NEC 500, American Petroleum Institute (API) RP 500 for Area Classification, and API RP 14F Recommended Practice for Class and Division Electrical Equipment Installation. The course has been certified by CompEx, a validation scheme for personnel working in explosive atmospheres.

For those working in dangerous environments, this kind of practical training is invaluable, and it could save lives if such a situation should occur in the real world.

“Proper training and certification can help reduce the potential for catastrophic events and can help keep everyone involved in hazardous work areas safe,” said Allan Clark, manager, Eaton’s Experience Center, in a press release. “By working with the ATEC Training Academy to exclusively offer the new NEC 500 CompEx-certified course, we are providing specialized training to help ensure a safe work environment for everyone from maintenance to management personnel.”

The Experience Center in Houston is the only NEC- and International Electrotechnical Commission-focus CompEx training location in North America that offers courses focusing on standards, electrical and mechanical skills, best practices, and other aspects of working with electricity or in explosive environments.
