The World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) new 4,000 square-foot headquarters in Stamford, Conn., is going smart and sustainable, according to a May 2023 press release. The new facility uses occupancy-based lighting control, data collection services and location intelligence from Enlighted, Santa Clara, Calif., a leading proptech company owned by Siemens that provides internet of things (IoT) solutions. In addition to improving operational efficiencies, these solutions will provide significant energy savings for the new WWE facility.
Nearly 4,280 smart sensors were used in the wireless, fault-tolerant network that’s part of a renovation and digital transformation initiative as WWE employees are scheduled to return to the office full time. IoT data collection services will gather data 65 times per second for optimal space management. Sensors will measure temperature, movement, power and other data. Specialized visualization dashboards will be used to derive insight for space design decisions.
“Space utilization isn’t just a matter of knowing how many people are in an office or production facility at a given moment—it’s about understanding how employees and guests are moving and interacting with spaces,” said Stefan Schwab, CEO of Enlighted. “The lighting-based sensors at WWE will capture vast amounts of data that WWE can use for a refined view of activity across all of their buildings. With the scalability of cloud storage, the company will be able to identify trends and preferences as they examine building usage data over time.”
Occupancy-based intelligent lighting controls feature flexible configurations for efficiency and energy savings that will contribute to the WWE’s goal of carbon neutrality. Configurations include task tuning, daylight harvesting and efficient lighting.
Using the same lighting-sensing environment, real-time location services not only assist in achieving occupancy-based energy savings, but also contribute to optimal space management to provide a productive environment for employees and track high-value assets such as collectibles and memorabilia and operational assets such as mail carts, merchandise samples and packages for improved inventory management.
Seen in more than 1 billion homes worldwide, WWE is a leader in global entertainment. Its new headquarters is a multipurpose space that includes office space, studios, production and post-production facilities, conferencing, event and outdoor terrace spaces. The size and complexity of the space requires understanding in order to optimize usage and energy savings. This was achieved through flexible technology that can adapt to a range of uses.
“The new WWE headquarters is comprised of spaces intended for a variety of very different uses,” said Rajan Mehta, WWE’s executive vice president and chief product and technology officer. “The Enlighted IoT smart building technology will make it possible for us to realize enormous energy savings, increase our operating efficiencies and use data to capture building activity for intelligent data-driven space decisions. IoT-based asset tracking and process flow improvements will make our headquarters truly a smart building.”
The new central management of operations—a “single pane of glass”—will help use open APIs and solve IoT use cases as WWE moves toward sustainability in the built environment.
