In the United States, renewable energy sources now produce nearly the equivalent of the electricity output as natural gas, which provides 35.1%, according to a June 2025 article in Solar Power World.

Solar power is the most rapidly expanding source of electricity in the country, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA)’s monthly “Electric Power Monthly” report, which released data for April 2025 on June 25, 2025. In April, solar power generated over 10% of the total national output, according to a review of EIA data by the SUN DAY Campaign, a movement promoting solar and wind power.

A decade ago, renewable energy only provided 16.7% of total generation, while natural gas generated 31.5%, coal generated 30.3% and nuclear power generated 20.4%. This April, almost one-third (32.8%) of total U.S. electrical generation came from renewables—a new record—according to the latest data from EIA. Natural gas electrical output dropped by 4.4% during April, according to the data.

Electrical generation from utility-scale solar (greater than 1 megawatt) increased by 39.3%, while small-scale rooftop solar photovoltaic generation increased by an estimated 11.8%, growing a combined 31.3% and generating 10.7% of U.S. electrical output in April.

Solar power is now generating more electricity than hydropower, biomass and geothermal energy combined. In April, solar-generated electricity—6%—also exceeded the output of the nation’s hydropower plants, according to the EIA.

In the first four months of the year, solar and wind power combined produced one-fifth of total U.S. electrical generation. This mix of renewables generated more electricity than coal (20.2% more) and nuclear power (13.8% more), according to the EIA data. Wind, utility-scale and small-scale solar combined produced 20.3% of the nation’s total electrical generation, an increase from 18.5% in the first four months of 2024. In April alone, solar and wind power produced one-fourth (24.6%) of the country’s total electrical output.
