Online Gaming Revenues to Triple by 2009

Revenues from US online gaming services will increase from $1,100,000,000 in 2005 to more than $3,500,000,000 in 2009, according to “Networked Gaming: Driving the Future,” a new report from Dallas-based, market research firm Parks Associates. Networked gaming services, including online console gaming, massively multiplayer online gaming (MMOG), multiplayer Internet gaming, and mobile multiplayer gaming, will account for almost 50 percent of online gaming revenues in 2009, followed by digital downloads at 23 percent.

“The two primary drivers for online gaming are networked services and digital distribution,” said Yuanzhe “Michael” Cai, director of broadband and gaming for Parks Associates. “Over the next four years, the gaming industry will no longer depend solely on retail sales but will see more balanced and diversified business models.”

The report also concludes that games-on-demand services will complement digital distribution and, in addition, game publishers and service providers could generate significant derivative revenue from in-game advertising and secondary market exchange.

Lake Tahoe Resort Launches Smart Cards for Guests

With the recent installation of an electronic locking system for visitors’ lockers, guests of Northstar Resort-at-Tahoe, Lake Tahoe, Calif., can be assured of heightened security during their stay. The new locks are powered by LEGIC Identsystems Ltd., a developer and manufacturer of secure, contactless smart card technologies for personal identification applications headquartered in Switzerland.

Owned by Booth Creek Resorts, Northstar is a year-round resort and one of North America’s largest skiing areas. The resort is currently in the midst of capital improvements valued at more than $50 million to enhance mountain use and amenities for the visiting public. One of the state-of-the-art improvements to the public facilities has been to amend personal and public security by fitting the guest locker rooms with electronic lockers.

The lockers, which have an integrated system for ski boot heating, are secured by battery-operated GAT Lock 6000 locks. They are operated with data carriers integrated in a user pass or multiple-user passes for the family lockers. In addition to the new locker security at Northstar, the resort plans to further augment security for its guests with electronic access control systems for entry into the ski room by winter 2006.

2006 MLB All-Star Game Used Video Analytics Security System

Intelligent video analytics systems are helping to provide security teams with an extra set of eyes that never get tired, bored or distracted, which is a big asset for security personnel at a big event such as Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game.

PNC Park in Pittsburgh, site of the 2006 All-Star Game held this summer, made use of Reston, Va.-based Cernium Corp.’s intelligent video analytics system to monitor security video for events surrounding the game. PNC Park’s security consultant selected the system, which alerts security personnel when it detects irregular behavior, such as people in distress, abandoned or removed objects, facility intrusions and suspicious individuals.

“Advanced video analytics is an extremely effective way to ensure that every security camera is being continuously monitored for behaviors or events that may require the added attention of security or law enforcement personnel,” said Chris Wetzel, chief operating officer of InterTECH, the security consultant.
