According to one study, broadband over power line (BPL) is advancing the cause for high-speed access by emerging as an application for various uses.
Scottsdale, Ariz.-based market research firm In-Stat reported that BPL has been growing steadily for several years as the connection of choice for in-home networking and access/utility company applications. The report, titled “Powerline Home Networking 2007 Update: Gaining Power in the Global Market,” projects the technology to continue its steady growth in the future.
Joyce Putscher, an In-Stat analyst, cites the need for no new cabling as one of BPL’s advantages in the race for multimedia home networking.
“Management and conservation of energy has become the overriding driver for smart grid, utility applications, where both broadband and low-speed power line communications will play a role,” she said. The In-Stat report projects global growth for broadband power line networking equipment to approach 100 percent for 2007.
