Renewable energy is making waves across the United States, and it may shed light on the future of energy generation trends in the country.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows that nearly 30% of electrical generation in April 2022 was produced by renewable energy sources, setting a new record.

Renewable sources, including wind, solar, biomass, geothermal and hydropower also accounted for over 25% of the country’s energy during the first four months of this year, according to SUN DAY Campaign.

EIA’s Electric Power Monthly for July 2022, which includes data through April 30, 2022, shows that solar and wind power grew by a combined 25%, making up one-sixth of the United States’ total electrical generation. The report also shows that solar increased by about 29% alone and wind by about 24%.

“Notwithstanding headwinds such as the COVID pandemic, grid access problems, and disruptions in global supply chains, solar and wind remain on a roll,” said Ken Bossong, executive director for the SUN DAY Campaign.

Use of various types of sustainable sources increased during the first four months of 2022, with hydropower increasing by almost 10%. Wind alone provided almost 71% more electricity than hydropower.

Another record was set in April: energy sourced from wind and solar produced more electricity than nuclear power plants did. This could foreshadow the evolution of how the country sources energy going forward, especially factoring in the rising cost of natural gas fuel.

Renewable energy sources out-generate coal and nuclear during the first three months of the year, and coal fell by 3.9% and nuclear dropped by 1.8%.

Bossong said this data shows that energy investments should be geared toward sustainable options.
