Move over supply chain interruptions, equipment availability is poised to disrupt even more construction projects, according to a March 2026 article in BDC Magazine.

The good news is that global demand for construction is up, with urban expansion, renewable energy developments, residential construction projects and large-scale transport infrastructure improvements leading the way.

However, all these projects combine to increase the need for more construction equipment. There will be less effect on big construction firms that have their own fleets, but for contractors that rely on equipment hire providers, the bad news is that competition may be fierce with multiple projects occurring simultaneously. Contending for similar types of machines at the same time¾even more so for specialized equipment in limited supply¾could delay project timelines.

Early stages of construction¾particularly site prep¾are particularly vulnerable to lack of equipment availability. Delays at this stage can create a ripple effect on subsequent phases of construction.

Desperate contractors might substitute one machine for another or adjust their workflow in an attempt to keep on schedule, but these workaround solutions often end up reducing productivity and adding extra costs.

Instead, it’s important to include equipment sourcing in project planning much earlier to minimize delays due to equipment shortages. Using an equipment hire directory can assist by providing visibility of locally available machinery in a fragmented hire market made up of many independent suppliers. A directory allows contractors to identify alternative suppliers if needed and easily compare suppliers, reducing the time needed to check each supplier’s availability, compare spec sheets and arrange delivery logistics.

Due to escalating costs of machinery with pricey new features and technologies, some contractors may start relying on equipment hire platforms instead of purchasing new machines. This adds to the competition for equipment during peak construction activity¾another reason access to a directory is critical.

Digital tools are leveling the playing field by allowing all contractors to see what equipment is available. Contractors can manage the risk of equipment-related delays and reduce the effort of sourcing machinery, thus keeping projects on time.
