Our world becomes more interconnected every day. Electrical contractors are vital in making this possible, both through powering information technology systems and installing operational technology. With building control systems converging and leaning toward open internet of things devices, we find ourselves navigating the fourth industrial revolution, also referred to as Industry 4.0.
As we focus on cabling and networking in this issue, NECA’s Executive Director of Network Integration and Services Jeff Beavers is working with NECA’s Technology Systems Integration Task Force to promote industry-wide guidance in this field. Connecting operational technology and information technology systems can be greatly beneficial for businesses to collect better metrics, improve decision-making processes and even improve the cost efficiency of buildings. But how does this impact our industry?
Our NECA professionals are dedicated to promoting new technology in a way that doesn’t disrupt our workforce. Implementing new tools and software can be confusing when deciding who is responsible for overseeing and maintaining these new systems. NECA is working collectively with skilled workers and EC managers to devise effective processes for these new technologies and trends that change our industries. One of the key factors in executing these processes has to be following standards-based practices for cabling buildings. Cabling and connectivity component specification and selection, along with codes and standards-based design and installation practices, are paramount to avoiding installation failures and network downtime. The end-users, communities and industries we serve will look to us for leadership through the digital transformation.
NECA is working at every level to keep our members, and our EC industry as a whole, connected—whether through cabling and building controls, safety updates or political advocacy. One of NECA’s largest services to its members every year is the Legislative Conference. This month, the NECA’s Government Affairs team will organize and facilitate discussions between NECA members and national politicians to bring awareness to the needs of our industry. By connecting policymakers and skilled laborers, infrastructure output will flourish.
Efficient and effective connectivity—that is what NECA persistently strives for.
