The second annual Energy Efficiency Day will take place October 5. This year's theme is, "Save energy. Save money."
According to the event's website, "Scores of prominent organizations, companies, government agencies and others will promote energy efficiency through social media messaging and other content. The growing list includes cities, utility commissions, utilities, government agencies, companies and a long list of nonprofit advocacy organizations working throughout the country."
The site notes:
- Reliable, affordable energy is vital to our economic prosperity, and energy efficiency is the most productive and cost-effective way to meet our energy needs.
- Implementing clean energy policies and programs helps boost economic opportunities and job creation, while continuing to move toward a sustainable future.
- Cutting energy waste saves U.S. consumers billions of dollars on their utility bills annually, up to $500 per household from appliance efficiency standards alone.
- More than 2.2 million Americans work in the energy efficiency sector in jobs that can't be outsourced, and increasing energy efficiency will create more of these jobs.
- Smarter energy use reduces the amount of electricity we need to power our lives, which helps avoid power plant emissions that can harm our health, pollute our air and warm our climate.
The Energy Efficiency Day campaign seeks individual supporters and organizational participants, and it encourages all supporters and participants to utilize social media and press efforts to raise awareness among the media and among the public directly, using shared content, stories and concrete examples of the value of energy efficiency.
It suggests several ways in specific for interested parties to get involved prior to October 5:
- Use the campaign's sample social media posts to direct visitors to energy efficiency tips on your own website.
- Write and post a blog about your energy efficiency success stories and tips.
- Contact your local and state elected officials, asking them to proclaim October 5 as Energy Efficiency Day.
- Issue your own press statement urging your customers and audiences to save energy.
- Promote your own energy efficiency success stories before and after the campaign.
