Nationwide investments in our infrastructure are finally hitting the ground. We’re seeing progress on energy grids, transportation systems and broadband expansion—all of which require skilled electrical professionals to lead the way. These upgrades not only bring opportunities for growth, but also reinforce our continued focus on workforce development, safety and innovation.

From digital layout tools to integrated project delivery platforms, construction technology is reshaping job sites. Many of our members are embracing the shift toward automation, A.I., real-time project tracking and advanced modeling. It’s critical that we stay ahead of this curve to remain competitive, efficient and aligned with customer expectations. NECA offers a Tool & Equipment Rental Guide on its website for either internal estimating and cost accounting or for quoting prices to customers. NECA always recommends the cost of tools and equipment be included in the estimate as direct job expenses and not as a part of general overhead or operating expenses.

An emerging trend we’re seeing is the strategic organization of tools in the same way we manage prefab materials. Ergonomic designs, battery interoperability across brands and connected tools with diagnostic capabilities are transforming how we work. Contractors are prioritizing lightweight, high-performance tools that support productivity without sacrificing safety. We also see many of our contractor members exploring drone pilot programs and integrating drone use where appropriate. This is a technology with vast potential for our field—if used properly.

A great event to learn even more about innovative technology, industry trends and new tools is the annual NECA Convention and Trade Show. This year’s gathering—a tool you can use in itself—will take place in Chicago from Sept. 12–15. Registration is officially open for all industry professionals as well as non-tradespeople just curious about the electrical field. Find more information about the event and sign up online at NECAConvention.org. There, you will find a convention and trade show overview with a glimpse of everything the event has to offer, including a schedule-at-glance, keynote speakers and elaborate receptions sponsored by industry partners.

Our association remains committed to helping you adapt, protect your assets and thrive in this fast-moving environment. Together, we’re building smarter, safer and more resilient systems for the future.
