Wind energy use is on the rise globally. Reporting issued by the Global Wind Energy Council reveals that 2023 was the best year on record for the wind industry, with 117 gigawatts (GW) of new wind power capacity—a 50% increase from 2022—installed worldwide.
Wind turbine manufacturers also had a record in growth, with demand-driven expansions seen in the United States, China and Germany.
Although there are many factors that determine how much energy a turbine produces, including size and windspeed, approximately 425 terawatts of electricity were generated in the United States in 2023, making it the nation’s most-used renewable energy source, far outpacing hydroelectric and solar.
The IBEW offers assistance for members looking to transition into the field. These electricians must be comfortable working in high and small spaces and remote locations. Technicians earn an average annual salary of around $78,000.
While the wind industry is seeing record expansion and profits, the report stresses that an annual growth of 320 GW is needed to meet the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference pledge to triple the world’s installed renewable energy generation capacity by 2030.
There is also the goal of “capping global warming to 1.5°C (2.7°F)” stated in the Paris Agreement.
Global Wind Energy Council CEO Ben Backwell said, “It’s great to see wind industry growth picking up, and we are proud of reaching a new annual record. However, much more needs to be done to unlock growth.”
