General Requirements

General Requirements

General requirements are provided in Chapter 1 of the National Electrical Code, specifically Article 110. In Section 90.2(A), the NEC’s purpose is clearly protection of people and property from hazards arising from electricity use. There are a few Code rules and informational notes that directly relate to the general requirements provided in Section 110.10. Let’s test how well you understand these requirements and how they work.

1. A service includes the conductors and equipment of the premises wiring system connected to the serving utility.

Correct Answer: True

2. Informational notes in the NEC are enforceable as requirements.

Correct Answer: False

3. Notes to NEC tables are enforceable requirements, and they can apply to the table directly or to other NEC sections as referenced.

Correct Answer: True

4. Which of the following is not a standard ampere rating for an overcurrent protective device?

Correct Answer: 75

5. The NEC generally requires that the total circuit impedance, overcurrent protective devices, equipment short-circuit current ratings and other circuit characteristics be selected and coordinated so the circuit protective devices can effectively respond and operate in a fault event, and they must do so without extensive damage to the electrical equipment of the circuit.

Correct Answer: True

6. The Insulated Cable Engineers Association publishes information about short-circuit characteristics of insulated copper and aluminum conductors.

Correct Answer: True

7. The term “extensive damage” is defined in Article 100.

Correct Answer: False

8. Which of the following describes the performance of the ground-fault current paths?

Correct Answer: Section 250.4

9. Section 110.9 addresses interrupting ratings of equipment rather than withstand ratings of wire-type conductors.

Correct Answer: True

10. What is the minimum size aluminum equipment grounding conductor required for a feeder protected by a 2,500A overcurrent device?

Correct Answer: 350 kcmil
