I often hear it referred to as our best-kept secret. What is it? A career in the electrical construction industry. While high school seniors struggle to complete college applications and their parents apply for financial aid packages, our industry is launching an all-out campaign to recruit talent for craftsworker and management positions. A high-paying, rewarding career that provides on-the-job training and no college debt is an option, yet only a small fraction of each graduating high school class knows about or considers our trade. Why is that? I think it’s because we haven’t done a good enough job telling our story.
My name is David Long, and I’m the new president of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). In 1975, I was that high school senior contemplating the biggest decision of my life—whether to enter college or an industry trade. Choosing the trade, I started as an electrical apprentice and worked my way up to president of Miller Electric Co. in Jacksonville, Fla. My career path is an example of the tremendous opportunities afforded by our industry.
One of my main objectives as NECA president is to help each of you build your workforce for the market ahead. I’m excited about the future and the opportunities our industry offers, but we can no longer remain a secret. You’ll hear much more from me in the coming months. In the meantime, please help educate and build enthusiasm among the future workforce. As industry leaders, we need to make our presence known and get personal with this upcoming generation by giving them a glimpse into our lives. Let’s bring in the best and brightest by showing them the rewards that are available in our fast-paced and growing industry. Together we can ensure we have the manpower necessary to sustain the industry and keep our companies viable by recruiting the best talent into the electrical trade.
