On Oct. 18, more than 200 line technician teams competed for “best in world” titles at the International Lineman’s Rodeo at the National Agricultural Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, Kan.
Now in its 31st year, the rodeo attracts the best linemen from from the United States, Canada and United Kingdom to compete in events designed to test their skill and knowledge of safety practices. Such events include 40-foot pole climbs, simulated pole-top rescues, equipment repair procedures and more.
Both journeymen and apprentices compete but in separate classes. An apprentice is a line worker with less than four years of utility experience. A journeyman has greater than four years of utility experience.
Last year, a Duke Energy apprentice won “best in world,” and Duke Energy journeyman teams won four awards.
“Our line workers are at the core of our service mission,” said Lynn Good, Duke Energy President and CEO. “Their craft is essential to delivering the power on which our customers depend.”
This year, however, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) was the top story. One of its teams—represented by technicians Anthony Albright, Adam Beene and J.P. Richard—took home three first-place awards.
“PG&E line workers dedicate themselves every day to providing our customers—their family, friends and neighbors in the communities where they live and work—with service that is safe and reliable,” said Chris Johns, PG&E president. “We are proud of their daily commitment to our customers and to see them get the recognition they so richly deserve.”
The same could be said of many of the runners up, who all displayed great skill and safety knowledge in the competition.
“The IBEW Local 1245 is proud of all of our members who competed in the international rodeo,” said Tom Dalzell, business manager for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 1245, which was also honored in the competition. “These linemen truly represent the best of our craft and show just how proud we are of our trade.”
