The 100th PGA Championship took place Aug. 9–12 at Bellerive Country Club in Town and Country, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis. Around the edges of the main event, the work of St. Louis-based electrical contractor Guarantee Electrical Co. could be seen everywhere.

Along with IBEW Local No. 1, the EC powered “every facet” of the PGA Championship. Almost everything was powered by generators, which Guarantee Electrical used to bring various aspects of the event to life. Normally a private club, Bellerive Country Club had to be prepared for increased activity all across the 7,500-plus-yard course.

This temporary power not only provided electricity but also connectivity. An estimated 1,000 journalists were present to cover the event, including camera crews, and the generators helped ensure every shot of the tournament was covered without a hitch. Media members were able to stay connected throughout the course, and a massive media center provided a high-tech home base.

For fans, the centerpiece was the 46,800-square-foot PGA Merchandise Pavilion, which needed power for conditioning, wireless communications, lighting, video and more. Concession stands also were hooked up to this temporary power so fans could get refreshments.

The project began one year ago, when Guarantee Electrical connected temporary power to the PGA’s on-site trailer. From there, the EC gradually ensured power was connected everywhere it would need to be before the big weekend in August.

“The PGA was a spectacular showcase for St. Louis worldwide,” said Jim Curran, executive vice president, Electrical Connection, a labor-management partnership between the IBEW and NECA in the St. Louis region. “We are extremely proud of our IBEW/NECA team, which for decades has been the region’s go-to source for reliable and safe electrical and communications infrastructure needed for major events. The PGA and Bellerive Country Club delivered a great tournament for fans and we were pleased to be part of it.”
