To meet growing energy demands and replace aging infrastructure, the University of Maine undertook a large-scale utilities upgrade. A significant portion of this effort was the installation of new underground electrical conduit across campus, enabling safe and efficient power distribution to new buildings, labs and athletic facilities.
Challenge
Historically, the university used steel conduit for underground utilities. Over time, this rusted and made cable replacement nearly impossible without costly excavation. Initially, designers proposed PVC schedule 80 encased in concrete. However, based on prior experience, project engineers were hesitant to use PVC due to its burn-through risk during cable pulls. Steel was also ruled out due to corrosion, high labor and maintenance costs, and material prices. The challenge was to find a durable, cost-effective and efficient alternative that could withstand future demands.
Solution
Project engineers recommended Champion Fiberglass® 5-inch RTRC conduit after researching its performance and reviewing comparative installation data. They were impressed with the Champion Duct® installation time, low coefficient of friction, corrosion resistance, no burn-through and fault resistance that made repairing cable easier. Importantly, Champion Duct’s UL listing met university standards.
Despite initial resistance from contractors and designers unfamiliar with fiberglass in duct bank systems, engineers were able to present technical documentation demonstrating the benefits of Champion Duct. The choice was ultimately approved without issue, and Champion Fiberglass became the new standard for power system conduit across campus.
Results
Results have validated the Champion Fiberglass decision. Contractors have reported faster-than-expected duct bank installation. Flowable fill was used to speed up burial in grassy areas, while reinforced concrete was applied under roads and parking lots. Champion Fiberglass provided on-site support, conducted a demo in the electrical shop and helped resolve thermal challenges involving steam infrastructure. The positive experience has led to Champion Duct being specified for future upgrades.
