The institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Electrical Safety Workshop (ESW) is intended to change and the electrical safety culture, according to the organization. The 2020 ESW conference was held from March 2-6, 2020 at the Peppermill Resort in Reno, Nev.
Topics included hazard phenomena, inherently safer design, work practices, hazard mitigation and electrical safety management. Four two-hour tutorials, held on March 3, covered topics ranging from the changes to NFPA 70E-2021, electrical safety for everyone, matching the right PPE to each hazard and impedance-grounded systems.
Shorter sessions presented attendees with information on leveraging Prevention through Design principles in electrical installations, GFCIs, best practices and how NFPA 70B addresses the reliability requirement of NFPA 70E.
The conference also featured a products and services expo on March 4, where attendees could learn about and experience the latest technology and services on the market.
On March 5, focus session presentations took a deep dive on several topics, including lithium-ion battery safety, understanding the effect of electrode configuration in incident energy and arc flash, a state by state comparison of occupational electrical facilities and more.
ESW’s goals is to provide ways for people to meet and exchange ideas on best practices for preventing work site electrical accidents and injuries. It works to accelerate advancements in safety technology, work practices, standard and regulations.
The 2021 ESW will be held in Tuscon, Ariz. from March 8-12.
