According to Building Magazine, the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) depends on diverse variables, including the goal of surveillance, installation cost, staff to run and monitor the system, and system maintenance, notes security manage-ment consultant Michael A. Hodge.
One of the most sweeping revisions in CCTV-system usage is the shift from hard-wired to wireless systems, as the latter can signifi-cantly reduce labor costs by requiring minimal drilling.
Camera features also are undergoing a transformation, from the still widely used pan/tilt/zoom cameras to video analytics, in which a system is programmed to notify operators when something enters the camera’s field of view. Hodge said intelligent video can lower opera-tor costs dramatically, as the system alerts users in real time. He also cited the importance of maintenance to ensure the system is working properly.
