PJM Interconnection, the electricity grid operator serving 51 million people in the District of Columbia and 13 states, received the Platts Global Energy Award of “Energy Transporter of the Year.” The award recognizes excellence in the movement of energy—whether electricity or the physical transportation of natural gas, coal or oil.
Last year, Phillip G. Harris, PJM’s president and chief executive officer, was named Platts Global Energy Awards CEO of the Year.
Platts cited PJM’s ability in 2005 to deliver record amounts of electricity while completing the last of a series of integrations that doubled the organization’s size. In June 2005, PJM became the first central grid operator in the world to handle loads of more than 100,000 megawatts (MW), according to Platts. “The company did so smoothly and efficiently, just as it did the following month, when it successfully met a new world-record demand of 134,017 MW during a summer heat wave.”
PJM has since surpassed the record three times. It set the latest record on Aug. 2, 2006, with 144,644 MW. EC
