The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) will again honor excellence in green residential design and construction practices and outstanding green advocacy efforts with the 2009 NAHB National Green Building Awards on May 8 in Dallas at the 11th annual Green Building Conference.
Awards will be given in the following categories: Advocate of the Year (Builder, Remodeler, Individual, Group); Project of the Year (Single Family, Remodel, Multifamily); Development of the Year; HBA Green Building Program of the Year (New and Existing); and Outstanding Green Marketing.
The NAHB has established a new category for 2009: the Local Government Award, to recognize a government body that has worked to allow and encourage green practices. The nomination for this award must come from a local home builders’ association.
“Home builders and housing industry professionals are instrumental in adoption of sustainable building practices that benefit homowners, the environment and the economy,” said Ray Tonjes, NAHB Green Subcommittee chair and a green remodeler and builder in Austin, Texas.
All award applications, supporting documentation and photographs must be submitted through e-mail or on a CD. Download entry forms at www.nahb.org/greenbuildingawards. The NAHB is not accepting paper applications.
To be eligible, projects must have been started after June 2007 and been substantially completed by December 2008. Additional entry requirements and an online application are available at www.nahb.org/greenbuildingawards. Entries must be postmarked by Jan. 31, 2009.
Contractors that wish to enter can score projects to the green certification program of their choice to ensure eligibility. However, all single-family homes must be scored to the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines or National Green Building Standard. The NAHB has an online scoring tool available at www.nahbgreen.org.
In the 2008 awards program, 17 building industry professionals were honored for excellence and innovation in green home building at the 10th Annual NAHB National Green Building Conference in New Orleans. More than 200 members attended the event.
