In a special general session, the Labor Relations Fireside Chat, NECA members had a rare and exclusive opportunity to hear from both NECA and IBEW leadership. David Long, CEO of NECA, and Kenneth W. Cooper, international president of IBEW, discussed labor relations issues affecting the present and shaping the future of the electrical industry. Attendees were able to learn from their perspectives as leaders on partnership strategies, collaborative successes, national trends and industry evolution.

Long said, “Typically, International President Cooper addresses the NECA Board of Governors as part of an industry update, and only those present at that meeting hear directly from him. This year, by bringing back the Labor Relations fireside chat, every attendee at the NECA Convention had the opportunity to hear directly from both of us on the matters most critical to our contractor members and the industry. The fireside chat was an invaluable opportunity to bring our industry together. These conversations allow us to reflect on the strength of our partnership, address the challenges and opportunities ahead, and reaffirm our shared commitment to shaping the future of electrical construction.”

Long and Cooper discussed, among other topics, collaboration between NECA and the IBEW, and the state of the workforce. Speaking about workforce growth, Cooper said, “We had the best year in growth in the IBEW since I graduated from high school…a record in almost a half century.” Both leaders agreed that while there is work ahead, the future of the industry is bright.

Long added, “Having as many people as possible hear the same messages at the same time was a powerful way to align NECA as we build America’s future—ensuring our contractors and IBEW members are united in driving innovation, safety and growth for the entire industry. I sincerely thank International President Cooper for his time and willingness to have this conversation with me at our convention.”
