I’ve spent my entire career in the electrical industry, but my journey didn’t begin in a boardroom or behind a desk; it began as an apprentice. Like so many others in our field, I learned the trade from the ground up—hands-on, in the field, working alongside experienced professionals who passed down their knowledge and skills. That experience didn’t just teach me practical skills like installing systems or reading plans; it fundamentally shaped my entire career. It instilled in me a deep respect for the craft, a relentless work ethic and a firm belief in the vast opportunities this industry offers to those willing to seize them.

Apprenticeship is more than just job training—it’s a launchpad for a fulfilling, rewarding and lifelong career. I’ve seen apprentices grow into master electricians, project managers, business owners and industry leaders. It’s a system that has stood the test of time, providing a direct path to high-quality, high-paying careers without the crushing debt that often accompanies a four-year degree. It is a proven model that empowers individuals while meeting the demands of a dynamic workforce.

On National Apprenticeship Day, April 30, we celebrate this time-honored tradition and the men and women who commit to learning a skilled trade. It’s a reminder that apprenticeship is not just about filling jobs—it’s about building careers, strengthening communities and ensuring the future of our workforce. Our electrical industry thrives because of this pipeline of talent, and its impact resonates far beyond the job site.

At NECA, we are deeply committed to investing in the next generation of electrical workers through robust apprenticeship programs. But we need more young people, parents and educators to recognize the incredible benefits and value apprenticeships provide. I urge you to spread the word. Tell every young person you know, “if you want a career that challenges you, rewards you and offers endless possibilities, look no further than the skilled trades. It worked for me, and it can work for you.”

Let’s seize the opportunity National Apprenticeship Day provides to inspire the next wave of people entering our industry. By doing so, we ensure a stronger, brighter and innovative future for our electrical contracting industry and our nation—one built by skilled hands and driven by limitless potential.
