From embracing smart grid technology to adopting A.I. and machine learning for predictive maintenance, the electrical industry is demanding forward-thinking solutions. We saw this in the collaboration and exchange of diverse opinions at the NECA 2024 San Diego Convention and Trade Show.

Expanding our horizons beyond national borders presents a significant advantage. By venturing into markets around the world, U.S. electrical contractors can gain exposure to innovative techniques and projects, often providing access to cutting-edge advancements in energy systems and grid modernization.

As exciting as these prospects are, working abroad comes with its own set of challenges. See “No Contractor Is an Island” on page 44. When it comes to obtaining and maintaining equipment, supply chain disruptions, tariffs and regulations regarding equipment and installation, standards often differ from one country to another. This makes it crucial for contractors to stay informed and agile in navigating procurement processes.

The Emerging Innovation Hub at NECA 2024 San Diego clarified the intricacies of battery storage technology—such as lithium-ion systems, safety regulations and performance protocols. The industry’s growing focus on microgrids, decentralized energy production and peak demand management means contractors that excel in battery energy storage systems installations will be at the forefront of shaping tomorrow’s energy landscape. In  a future powered by renewable energy, these storage systems will play a critical role in enhancing grid stability, energy efficiency and reliability.

NECA constantly encourages member contractors to foster a culture of innovation—investing in new technologies and continuously educating our workforce to remain competitive on the global stage. Many electrical contractors are leveraging automation, advanced data analytics and cutting-edge design software to improve operational efficiency and enhance safety.

Let’s continue the momentum from NECA 2024 San Diego when it comes to international partnerships, workforce development and training and exploring innovative techniques. Together, we can shape the future of electrical contracting, both at home and abroad.
