Sharpening Your Ax

President David Long

Fall is in the air, and with the changing of the seasons, it’s a great time to consider the changes that will lead us to corporate and personal success over the long haul. As I’ve traveled the country, it has been evident to me that our robust economy has electrical contractors growing like never before. It’s the perfect opportunity not only to grow our companies but also to give back and leave everyone better.

As I stated earlier this month at NECA’s Convention and Trade Show in Philadelphia, there is no time like the present—the time is now! It’s time to self-reflect and sharpen our proverbial axes in order to take full advantage of the harvest in our flourishing economy.

How do we do that? As leaders, let’s commit to work on our businesses rather than in our businesses. Analyze every aspect of our place in the industry, and solidify each area that will help us become sustainable, viable and imaginable in 2019.

Abraham Lincoln said, “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax.” These are exciting times. Let’s control our enthusiasm, however, with a prepared skill set leading to prosperity. Enjoy this wonderful time in our industry!
