The start of a new year is always a great time to reflect on our accomplishments and plan for the future. NECA had an eventful year in 2019, and the staff has laid out big plans for 2020.
This issue offers an examination of the construction economy, based on the 2020 Dodge Construction Outlook and other economic forecasts that writer Jeff Gavin attended in person and online. This report can be a useful tool as we plan for the year ahead. As business owners who work in construction, we never like to see a decline in construction starts, which are expected to drop 4% this year. However, there are some bright spots in the report, such as in public works construction starts, which are expected to increase 4% across all project types.
The uncertainty about the ongoing trade war and upcoming presidential election may affect construction as well. No matter what, a detailed outlook helps to put things in perspective. The more information we can gather helps us all as we establish our business plans.
Information such as Electrical Contractor’s Construction Outlook provides is just one example of the critical tools NECA offers its members. Others include the consistent news reporting shared through NECA newsletters, the website, this magazine and its website. I know I am not alone when I say I rely heavily on the information I get from NECA. Whether it is labor relations, legislation, safety regulations or educational opportunities, it all contributes to seeing a bigger picture. NECA helps me stay prepared for the inevitable changes that every business faces.
I hope you are all making the most of your membership, and I look forward to working with you in the year ahead. I wish you all a safe and successful 2020 and beyond.
