If you are reading this magazine, you likely already know the benefits of a career in the electrical industry. Our work is incredibly fulfilling, and there are so many paths one can take once they get started. To this day, it brings me great pride to drive around and point out all the facilities that our family company has had a hand in building in my hometown of Shreveport, La.

Not every line of work can bring you this level of satisfaction, while also being able to reliably provide for your family and loved ones. So, what can we do to tell the story of this career path to those who might not even know about it?

In many areas of the country, electrical contractors are facing the same issue: an ongoing workforce shortage. People in our industry are retiring faster than they can be replaced. Tackling this has been an ongoing priority at NECA, and we are continuing to explore all the different ways we can work together to find solutions. At the end of the day, I believe we need to do a better job of telling the story of our industry to younger generations. So many of them are perfect for this career; they just may not know it yet.

This edition of the magazine explores several aspects of workforce development in 2022, from championing diversity, equity and inclusion to focusing on retention to creating a company culture that employees will not want to leave. At NECA, we place a real emphasis on growing people in our companies and offer many educational and networking opportunities to help achieve that goal. Additionally, we are making efforts to ensure that the doors of our industry are open to everyone, regardless of gender, race or any other aspect of their background.

By reading this issue, we hope you are inspired to help grow our industry, bring in new people and develop the ones we have. We all know the positive impact that electrical contracting has had on our lives; now we need to do all we can to ensure that impact can be felt by the next generation.
