Domino's Pizza Shop Sets World Record For LED Lighting Efficiency

A Domino’s Pizza outlet in Dover, N.J., secured a place in energy history when it recently completed the most
energy-efficient restaurant lighting retrofit in the world. Vanguard Energy Services, an authorized dealer of Independence light-emitting diode (LED) tubes and fixtures handled the retrofit to break the previous restaurant record set in 2010 for an Applebee’s in Newtown, Pa.

“We have many ‘firsts’ across the public and private sectors, but Domino’s hits a special chord,” said Charlie Szoradi, CEO of Independence LED. “Back in the ’80s, I delivered Domino’s pizza to help pay for my University of Virginia undergraduate architecture degree. Decades later, the massive potential quarter-billion dollars in cost savings across Domino’s worldwide footprint is part of a global energy tipping point.”

Typical 2-by-4-foot fluorescent troffer fixtures include four 32-watt (W) tubes, but the 15W Independence LED tubes were able to go from 128 to 60W for the 2010 Applebee’s record. For Domino’s, Vanguard recommended using the updated Independence LEDs at 50W per fixture. For roll-out to Domino’s and other accounts, Independence LED can now go down further to 44W per fixture. The retrofit kit also is DesignLights Consortium-listed for rebates. Business owners can save more than 65 percent with a return on investment of more than 40 percent, while using U.S.-made products with a 10-year warranty.

The energy saving at the Dover location is $2,400 per year ($25,000 over LED life of 10 years). Plus, it eliminates 325,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.

As the world’s largest pizza chain with more than 10,000 locations, if this energy-efficient LED lighting were installed in every Domino’s location, the potential global savings would be more than $250 million while eliminating approximately 3.25 billion pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
