California PUC Issues First State Video Franchise to Verizon

According to New York-based Verizon Communications Inc., when the California Public Utilities Commission awarded the first state-issued video franchise, it opened the possibility for hundreds of thousands more consumers to have the choice of the company’s FiOS TV, a digital, all fiber optic network video service.

FiOS TV offers consumers many high-tech benefits, which may motivate people to invest in this installation. If so, this would mean a growing need for fiber optic technicians.

Verizon was the first company to file an application for a state-issued video franchise under a new, pro-consumer video franchise law, passed in California last year and effective Jan. 1, 2007.

Under the franchise, Verizon can offer FiOS TV in 45 more communities in Southern California, in addition to the 18 communities where the service already is available under locally approved franchises.          EC
