Investing in Safety

The word that comes to mind when I look back at my NECA Now 2019 experience in Phoenix is “tremendous.” It was an energizing example of what the electrical construction industry is all about. As the new National Electrical Contractors Association president, I met countless people who were eager to share their stories about how they are building their businesses during these dynamic times.

NECA contractors are constantly engaged in necessary tasks like managing projects, diversifying the workforce and growing market share. These efforts have allowed us to pick up momentum in these critical areas. To achieve our potential as an industry, NECA members must provide proactive solutions while being the safest, most price-competitive options for our customers. If your company hasn’t already begun to tackle these issues, we can help you. Our educational programs and industry knowledge are great tools for you to use.

Of course, making safety your top priority has always been an important way to run your business. May is National Electrical Safety Month, which makes it a great time to emphasize your safety programs to your employees and your customers. Everyone will benefit from this! It’s also a time to ask yourself: How are you emphasizing safety? Are you talking about it in the office and on the job? Are you seeking out resources that will help your employees be a critical component in developing and maintaining a robust safety culture? Whether it be safety or anything else, leadership starts at the top of the organization. To make our industry safe, please take the time to lead safety meetings and engage with your people.

Keeping safety in the forefront, the 2019 NECA Safety Professionals Conference took place May 15–17 in San Antonio. It was an opportunity for NECA members to bring a customer to see the emphasis NECA contractors place on safety. The annual conference is an awesome event for safety professionals and one that’s packed full of training and educational opportunities.

Lastly, use National Electrical Safety Month and the 2019 NECA Safety Professionals Conference as vital reminders that safety is a year-round pursuit and an investment in your—and our industry’s—future.
