365 Main Building a Green Data Center in East Bay

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco data center operator 365 Main has broken ground on the nation's first "green" data center. 365 Main has five other data centers, but the Newark shell facility will be the first data center in the West built to meet the U.S. Green Building Council's green building certification system.

The company, which conceived the project in the hopes of meeting customer demand for more energy-efficient data centers, has found other ways to make their operations more energy efficient, including using more efficient lighting and cooling systems, supplanting backup batteries with more efficient power systems, water-efficient landscaping and alternative modes of transportation. The 136,410-square-foot Newark facility is scheduled to open at the end of this year.
