Internet of Things Helps Cities Get Smarter About Air Quality

The internet of things (IoT) has transformed society on many different levels and is poised to take that transformation one giant step further as smart cities are using the technology of interconnected devices to help address the mounting problem of air quality.

According to a recent report by market research firm Guidehouse Insights, the growth of the IoT industry is presenting new possibilities for air quality monitoring for cities that embrace digital technology.

Published in the second quarter of this year, the report analyzes the global market for IoT air quality sensor hardware, software and services.

The report finds that a combination of factors is creating a growing market for municipal IoT-enabled air quality sensors. Increased urbanization, a greater understanding of the health effects of poor air quality and the need to combat greenhouse gas emissions are driving more cities to adopt the technology.

The report finds that the new generation of air quality sensors provides an opportunity for smart cities to improve on existing technology by deploying multiple sensors at greatly reduced costs. Sensors can be deployed on light poles, buildings and other vertical structures. Mobile sensors can also be deployed on moving vehicles. All of this enables smart cities to gather more data about pollutants from various locations within their jurisdiction. Currently, most air quality data is gathered from only one location.

Guidehouse projects annual revenue in the IoT air quality sensor market to grow from $26.5 million worldwide in 2020 to $204.1 million by the year 2029. That is a combined annual growth rate of 25.4%.
