According to the Phoenix Business Journal, Arizona Public Service (APS) is set to retrofit more than 800,000 homes, businesses and apartment complexes in its service area with new “smart meters.”

APS says the advanced metering infrastructure will eliminate the need for in-person maintenance by field technicians. The meters use radio frequencies to interact among themselves, while the central meters gather and forward the data directly to APS via cellular signals.

APS retrofits may need an electrical contractor to do the work. For more information, read Chuck Ross’ “The Brains of the Operation” from the May 2007 issue of ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR.   EC
