Lutron: Examining TLED Lighting Scenarios in Retrofit Applications

Lighting industry experts from Lutron Electronics, the leader in energy-saving, wireless lighting and shade control, have created a technical whitepaper on TLED (Tubular Lighting Emitting Diodes) Lighting Scenarios for Retrofit Application. The paper will help facility managers and lighting professionals successfully select and install an appropriate TLED solution to retrofit existing fluorescent fixtures. TLED retrofits can provide energy-efficient advantages at a lower cost than a total lighting retrofit, but it is critical to consider the various available options, and manage the expectations of the final result.

As of 2016, TLEDs are one of the fastest-growing categories of LED products – they are relatively easy to install, provide energy and maintenance savings, and can qualify for generous utility rebates – but there can be tradeoffs. The whitepaper helps to explain the potential challenges with a TLED installation, and emphasizes that proper product selection is critical to ensure the functionality and performance of the existing system is not compromised.  Fully understanding the options is especially critical when a dimming system is already in place.

The new Lutron whitepaper offers background information, guidelines, and recommendations for using TLED products as retrofits with fluorescent fixtures and ballasts by describing the three different retrofit scenarios, and comparing advantages and challenges associated with each scenario –

  1. UL Type A: TLEDs retrofitted using existing fluorescent ballasts
  2. UL Type B: TLEDs wired directly to line voltage
  3. UL Type C: TLEDs supplied with dedicated LED drivers

“The choice of the right TLED retrofit solution is a careful balance of the ease of installation, cost, and performance,” said Ethan Biery, LED Engineering Leader for Lutron Electronics. “If a customer is looking for optimal performance and control system compatibility, Lutron recommends the use of a pre-certified ‘Type C’ solution consisting of a dedicated LED driver with low-voltage TLED tubes.”
