The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) gave permission for a 205-MW increase in the amount of electricity PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant can generate.
PPL Corp., Allentown, Pa., applied to the NRC in October 2006 for the power increase. PPL will own 185 MW. The rest will belong to the plant’s co-owner, Allegheny Electric Coop.
On two previous occasions, the NRC approved increasing generating capacity at the plant. In 1994, the NRC approved an increase by 4.5 percent, and in 2001, it approved an increase by 1.4 percent.
To increase the electrical output, several systems (primarily turbines and generators) are being modified. The increase will be implemented in phases between 2008 and 2010 as plant modifications are completed.
