ALTHOUGH RENEWABLE POWER has made great strides in recent years, more steps are needed to help alternative fuel sources, such as wind, solar and biomass, realize their full potential.
It’s the conclusion of a new report, “Transmission and Wind Energy: Capturing the Prevailing Winds for the Benefit of Customers,” released recently by National Grid, a northeast power provider. The report offers several suggestions for federal and state policy makers to help alternative fuel sources access the nation’s power grid.
In its paper, National Grid emphasizes the need for transmission policies that recognize the unique characteristics of wind and other renewable-power generation. It recommends more comprehensive regional planning, broader cost allocation for transmission improvements, remote siting and generation interconnection. By creating the most effective and reliable transmission access, these and other policies will encourage growth and investment in the renewable sector. -Rick Laezman
