According to the Dallas Morning News, a recent survey commissioned by Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (D/FW) found that about seven in 10 passengers carry some kind of electronic device. To draw more connecting passengers, who now account for about two-thirds of the airport’s 60 million annual passengers, the airport has partnered with a team of graduate business students from Texas Christian University to come up with ways to affordably offer business travelers a way to recharge their gadgets without inconveniencing other passengers or themselves.
D/FW is now piloting “Pump Up Your Portable” kiosks developed by AdComp Systems of Carrollton, Texas, at each of its five terminals. The workstations allow passengers to purchase access to power at their seats in increments of 30 minutes. AdComp shares a percentage of proceeds as an airport concessionaire. The kiosks complement existing efforts to improve wait times for business travelers, such as massage chairs at the airport’s Terminal C that include power outlets and Neptune Networks e-mail stations. D/FW has plans to add PowerPort kiosks that will allow travelers to lock up and recharge their gadgets as they eat or shop at the airport.
With an increasingly portable world, battery power is becoming more of an issue. These power kiosks may become a trend, which electrical contractors may be able to tap into. EC
