Although a small percentage, the ranks of businesses who have adopted or would like to adopt third-generation mobile telephone technology (3G) services is significant, and the carrier and electrical construction industries should take notice. Those are the conclusions of a recent study by the Scottsdale, Arizona-based market research firm, In-Stat.
According to the study, entitled “Business Demand for Wireless Voice and Data Services in the U.S.,” nearly 5 percent of employees in U.S. companies have already adopted 3G services, which provide the ability to transfer both voice data (a telephone call) and non-voice data (such as downloading information, exchanging e-mail, and instant messaging). Another 15 to 20 percent would be likely to do so.
Significantly, the research firm also found that usage and spending on mobile communications is greatest at mid-sized companies—those with 100 to 1,000 employees. The figure is at least 15 percent higher than companies of other sizes. Mid-sized companies reportedly spend about $90 per user on a monthly basis.
Among other significant findings, the study confirms that many businesses and employees place a high premium on Internet access, with a large number of them spending as much or more for Wi-Fi as they spend on monthly cellular bills.
