Most facilities have a hidden source of cash within their walls. People working in the energy-reduction field know that usually at least a 10 percent savings in energy can be achieved with a payback measured in less than two years, and often right in next month’s utility bill. The word "government" often invokes “regulation” (at least until it was replaced with “bailout”). However, governmental regulation of power quality is basically nil in North America, especially in the United States. This is in contrast to other places, where aspects of power quality beyond just nominal voltage range and frequency are covered. READ MORE

A few months ago, we answered a customer’s question about what equipment might be affected by a particular type of power quality phenomenon. The answer was based on Table 4.2 from IEEE Std 1159 Recommended Practice on Monitoring Electric Power Quality, and it seemed to be a logical way to address what can be a fairly complex process. On New Year's Eve, I visited someone in the hospital. I was struck by two things. First, there were patients and staff members in the wards, as, unfortunately, illness doesn’t follow a calendar. But overall, the hospital seemed nearly deserted, with most offices and labs closed, no one in the cafeteria, and only the occasional healthcare worker or security guard roaming the hallways. When most people think of finding the source of power quality problems, they imagine a meter or monitor with half a dozen or more wires connected to the voltage bus or terminals, along with three or four current transformers (CTs) clamped around either the bus bars or the wires. READ MORE
